Background
Motul, a renowned French company established in 1853, has been a pioneer in producing high-tech engine lubricants and fluids for two-wheelers, cars, heavy-duty vehicles, marine, and industrial applications. Headquartered in Singapore, Motul Asia Pacific operates in 17 countries with six subsidiaries in Vietnam, China, Japan, Indonesia, Thailand, and Malaysia, supported by a robust distribution network across the rest of the Asia Pacific region.
In addition to producing benchmark lubricants for all types of engines, Motul is a trusted supplier to numerous motorsport teams and Original Equipment Manufacturers, maintaining its status as a key partner of prestigious international racing competitions such as the Dakar Rally, 24 Hours of Le Mans, MotoGP, Roof of Africa, and many others.
The company has recognized the importance of sustainability and has been progressively integrating Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles into its operations.
Challenges prior to using Zuno Carbon’s end-to-end ESG solution
Before partnering with Zuno Carbon, Motul Asia Pacific encountered several challenges in managing its sustainability data:
- Building a comprehensive GHG inventory: To strengthen its sustainability framework, Motul Asia Pacific needed to account for their carbon-emitting assets and improve data collection for accurate reporting across their entire APAC operations.
- Manual processes: Initial data collection relied on manual inputs from multiple contact points (data owners) in the APAC region, which was time-consuming and prone to errors.
- Framework dilemma: With multiple reporting frameworks to choose from, identifying the most relevant one aligned to goals and objectives was challenging
- The need for a more robust system: The absence of a centralised system for their sustainability data resulted in delays in reporting and limited visibility into progress.
- Governance and workflow issues: There was a need for a structured workflow to assign data responsibilities, ensure data accuracy, and maintain governance across five operating entities and over 50 data owners.
